Where the tours start in Tokyo
Most coach tours leave from one of three places, and the exact spot matters more than the station name. At Tokyo Station, TAIHOU gathers at a sign marked "STAND T" at 07:30, Japan Visionary Tour at 08:00 and Zebra Travel at 07:30, while Joy OZ Tours meets on the Marunouchi North side. In Shinjuku, Japan Panoramic Tours and H.I.S. use the LOVE sculpture, and TAIHOU picks up at the Tokyo Mode Gakuen building at 08:00. Japan Panoramic Tours also departs from Matsuya Ginza.
The LOVE sculpture is a common source of trouble, because several tours gather there at the same time and the signs are small. Coaches leave on time and a no-show is not refunded. Go the day before if you can, or arrive a quarter of an hour early. If you would rather skip the meeting point altogether, Zebra Travel, both private drivers and some JRT Group options collect you from your hotel, and GORYO mentions hotel pickup as well.
Group sizes behind the labels
Only a few product pages give a real number. Zebra Travel caps its minivan at nine guests. The private tours take up to five (Mount Fuji Discoveries) or up to three (Wonder land) people per car. At the other end, Joy OZ Tours lists 1 to 45 guests and calls groups above 22 large, even though its web address still says boutique small group. On the H.I.S. Shinkansen tour one reviewer counted 42 passengers, and Japan Panoramic Tours runs large coaches. JRT Group writes that a small group is possible without naming a maximum. TAIHOU, GORYO and Japan Visionary Tour do not state a group size, so assume a full coach.
Cloud, closed roads and your money
Do not count on a refund because the mountain stayed in cloud. GORYO rules it out in plain words. Japan Panoramic Tours replaces stops lost to weather or closed roads with other stops or a gift. Zebra Travel does not refund changes caused by weather or traffic, and Wonder land runs in any weather. A couple of rules work in your favour: Mount Fuji Discoveries offers a full refund or other stops when the 5th Station is closed, and TAIHOU refunds the ropeway part by e-mail when the Hakone Ropeway does not run.
Use the free cancellation as your weather insurance
Every tour on this page can be cancelled free of charge up to a deadline shown on the booking page. Book early in your stay, check the forecast for the Kawaguchiko area before the deadline, and move to another day if the outlook is grey. That is the only reliable way to avoid paying for a day in the clouds.
The 5th Station between December and April
Tours reach the 5th Station on the Yamanashi side by the Fuji Subaru Line. The road is officially open all year but closes when snow or ice is on it, and from about December to early April that happens so often that many tours do not plan the stop at all. GORYO switches to a Mt Fuji museum outside the season, and the rest house at the 5th Station is closed from January to March. On the Shizuoka side, the Fujinomiya 5th Station has been in its winter closure since 10 September 2026. In the climbing season, roughly 10 July to 10 September, private cars are barred from the Subaru Line. At around 2,300 metres the 5th Station is much colder than Tokyo, so take a warm layer even in May, and skip the stop if you have heart or breathing problems or are pregnant.
Your month decides the view
Long-term data from Fuji City shows the mountain on roughly 40 to 55 percent of days from December to February and on about one day in twenty in July. Spring sits at around a fifth to a third of days, and November climbs back to around 40 percent. Mornings are clearer than afternoons, which is one reason the coaches leave Tokyo early. The month-by-month table also lists the 5th Station road status, the cherry blossom window at the Chureito Pagoda and the busiest traffic weeks.
Traffic and the way back
The drive back into Tokyo is the least predictable part of the day. TAIHOU names a planned return around 18:10 and warns that it can be after 20:00. GORYO allows for two to three hours of delay, and Joy OZ shortens the programme when traffic eats into the day, because its vehicle may only run a fixed number of hours. The worst dates in 2027 are Golden Week from 29 April to 5 May, the Obon holidays in mid-August and weekends in general. The tours with a Shinkansen return from Odawara avoid the final stretch of motorway. With H.I.S. you board the train on your own and the seats are unreserved, so a family may not sit together.
Who should think twice
JRT Group does not take travellers over 70, and Japan Visionary Tour asks guests aged 70 or over to sign a waiver. The Chureito Pagoda viewpoint at Arakurayama is around 400 steps up, and several tours pack many short stops into the day. Large suitcases cannot come on the coaches, and oversized luggage (over 160 cm in total dimensions) is restricted on the Shinkansen, so leave bags at the hotel. If you eat vegan, halal or gluten-free, bring your own food on the Japan Panoramic Tours day: its buffet does not cater for it.
