The 5th Station on the Yamanashi side sits at around 2,300 metres at the end of the Fuji Subaru Line, the mountain road up from the Fujiyoshida side. It is where the Yoshida climbing trail starts and as close to the summit as a day trip gets. Only some tours include it, and from about December to early April snow and ice often close the road. Here is which tours go up and what each one does when it cannot.

Snow, ice and the winter months

The Fuji Subaru Line is not closed for a fixed winter season. It closes whenever the surface is icy or snowed over, and from about December to early April that is frequent enough that many tours do not plan the 5th Station at all. GORYO says so on its product page: the 5th Station in season, a Mt Fuji museum outside it. Japan Panoramic Tours keeps the stop in its programme and, when the road is shut, replaces it with other stops or a gift instead of a refund. Mount Fuji Discoveries is the one tour here that offers a full refund if the 5th Station is closed, as an alternative to other stops. Even when the road is open in winter, the rest house at the top is closed from January to March.

The other 5th Stations

Mt Fuji has several 5th Stations. The tours on this page use the one on the Yamanashi side, reached by the Subaru Line. On the Shizuoka side, the Fujinomiya 5th Station has been in its winter closure since 17:00 on 10 September 2026, and stays out of reach for day trips until that road reopens.

Cold air and thin air

At around 2,300 metres the 5th Station is far colder than Tokyo, even when the city is warm. Take a warm layer and a windproof jacket in every season. The altitude is noticeable for some people after a quick drive up: skip the stop if you have heart or breathing problems or are pregnant, and stay on the coach or in the shops if you feel unwell. The 5th Station is a place to look and walk around; climbing higher is not part of any day trip on this site.

Clouds below, clouds above

The 5th Station can lie above the cloud on a day when the lakes are grey, or in the middle of it, with no view at all. A clear morning helps either way, which is one reason the coaches leave Tokyo early. The visibility figures by month show how much the chances change through the year, and in the warmer months, when the road is reliably open, the mountain is visible on far fewer days.

Travellers on the 5th Station tours

The critical review describes a day that went straight to lunch instead of the 5th Station after a late start and heavy traffic. The stop depends on the road and on the clock, and neither is guaranteed.

“The chosen tour was also perfect if you want to experience mount Fuji without actually hiking. We were quite high up mount fuji, which was amazing!”

“guide Aki was great, very disappointed with trip overall. … Arrived at Ginza, not allocated on Ginza bus, transferred to Shinjuku on Tokyo tour bus adding 1/2 hr Heavy traffic slower travel time to Mt Fuji, route straight to lunch instead of Mt Fuji 5th station Buffet lunch limited, very average.”

FAQ

Can I visit the Mt Fuji 5th Station in winter?

Often not. The Fuji Subaru Line closes when snow or ice is on it, and from about December to early April that happens so often that many tours leave the stop out. The rest house at the top is closed from January to March.

Which tours from Tokyo include the 5th Station?

Japan Panoramic Tours and H.I.S., when the road and weather allow. GORYO goes there in season and to a Mt Fuji museum outside it. With Mount Fuji Discoveries you can ask for it on a private route.

Do I get a refund if the 5th Station is closed?

Only Mount Fuji Discoveries offers one, as an alternative to other stops. Japan Panoramic Tours replaces the stop with other stops or a gift, and GORYO switches to a museum.

How high is the 5th Station and how cold is it?

Around 2,300 metres, and much colder than Tokyo in every season. Bring a warm layer and a windproof jacket.

Can I climb Mt Fuji on a day trip from Tokyo?

No. The day trips stop at the 5th Station, where the Yoshida trail begins. Climbing to the summit is a separate undertaking in the summer climbing season.
