A private Fuji tour is a car with an English-speaking driver for the day. You set the stops, the pace and the order, and you are picked up and dropped off at your hotel. The price is for the car, so the number of seats matters as much as the price itself: Mount Fuji Discoveries takes up to five people, Wonder land up to three.

Seats per car and what that means for your group

With a price per vehicle, the cost per head falls with every seat you fill. A family of four or five fits into the Mount Fuji Discoveries car and would need two cars with Wonder land. A couple pays the full vehicle price on either tour, so for two people the comparison with a minivan tour with nine seats is worth making.

Your driver is your guide

On both tours one person drives and explains. Wonder land calls the tour guided, but in practice the driver is the guide, and reviewers say as much. Mount Fuji Discoveries describes an English-speaking driver from the start. Expect directions, timing and local tips rather than a running commentary on history. In exchange you get the flexibility a coach cannot offer: when the summit is in cloud in the morning, you can go to Hakone first and come back to the lakes in the afternoon, or stay longer at the one viewpoint where the mountain shows. Wonder land reviewers describe drivers who moved the start forward to get ahead of the traffic, in one case to a quarter to six. Ask about the pickup time when you agree the route.

What the price covers

Mount Fuji Discoveries includes tolls and parking, which on a long motorway day are not a small item. Wonder land lists entrance fees and meals as extra and does not mention tolls on its product page, so ask before you book. On both tours, plan to pay for lunch, the Lake Ashi boat and any entrance tickets on the spot, and carry cash for it.

Agree the route before the day

Send the driver your list of must-see stops and your latest return time when you book. Lake Kawaguchi lies on the north side of the mountain and Hakone to the south-east, and every extra area adds driving time. Two areas and a fixed time back at the hotel make a plan the driver can keep.

The 5th Station and bad weather

Mount Fuji Discoveries has the clearest rule on this site for the 5th Station: if the road is closed, you choose between a full refund and other stops. From about December to early April that question comes up often, because snow and ice close the Fuji Subaru Line. Wonder land runs in any weather and does not name a rule for a closed 5th Station. Cloud is never a reason for a refund, on either tour. The free cancellation before the deadline on the booking page is what protects you, and the weather and cancellation rules are listed for each tour on a separate page.

Pickup areas

Mount Fuji Discoveries collects you at hotels in Tokyo and Saitama, Wonder land in Tokyo, Ueno and Yokohama. If you stay in Yokohama, Wonder land is the one that covers you; north of Tokyo in Saitama, it is Mount Fuji Discoveries. The planned duration on both is 10 to 11 hours door to door.

When a coach tour is the better choice

Travelling alone or as a couple on a budget, a coach or minivan tour costs a fraction of a private car. The same goes for anyone who wants a guide who only talks and never drives. The tour finder sorts every Fuji day trip on this site by situation.

Travellers on the private Fuji tours

The positive reviews are mostly about the driver, and one describes an early start to get ahead of the traffic. The critical ones point to the other side of a private tour: the whole day rests on one driver, whether that driver waits for your ideas on a rainy day or arrives late. One reviewer gives the driver full marks and the operator three stars without saying why in the part we quote.

“Our guide Sunny was awesome. He took us all over the region and gave great suggestions for other areas to go to on the rest of our Japan trip! It was a cloudy day and we didn’t see the top of Mt. Fuji but it was still an amazing and fun day.”

“He perfectly knows the area, how to avoid the traffic jam, generally how to save time, what makes sense to see/visit what does not. We originally intended to start the trip at 7 am, but after his advice, he picked us up at 5,45.”
Michael · Czech Republic · October 2026 Private Fuji tour · Wonder land
“Too bad it rained on the day of our trip. This limited what we could see. Our driver kept asking us for input instead of contributing ideas of what to do instead. Despite this our driver was able to take us to different locations like the ice cave, etc to make up for the lack of visibility.”
Verified traveler · Canada · June 2026 Private Fuji and Hakone tour · Mount Fuji Discoveries
“5 stars for Moon, 3 for the tour overall. Moon was punctual, friendly and endlessly helpful, holding bags, taking our photos, and shaping the day when we turned up underprepared. … The 3 stars sit with the operator.”
Liam · United Kingdom · September 2026 Private Fuji tour · Wonder land
“The location itself was good but the entire service was terrible. The drivers were rude and impolite.”
Verified traveler · United States · May 2026 Private Fuji tour · Wonder land
“Driver was late and car was dirty and small”

FAQ

How many people fit into a private Mt Fuji tour?

Up to five with Mount Fuji Discoveries and up to three with Wonder land. The price is per car, so a larger group pays less per head.

Is the driver also the guide?

Yes, on both tours. Mount Fuji Discoveries describes an English-speaking driver, and on the Wonder land tour the guide named in the listing is in practice your driver.

Are tolls and parking included?

With Mount Fuji Discoveries, yes. Wonder land does not mention tolls on its product page and lists entrance fees and meals as extra.

Can a private tour change the plan if Fuji is in cloud?

Yes, that is the main advantage over a coach. You can swap the order of the stops or spend more time where the view is clear. A refund for cloud is not offered on either tour.

Where can I be picked up?

Mount Fuji Discoveries picks up at hotels in Tokyo and Saitama, Wonder land in Tokyo, Ueno and Yokohama.
