On these tours the coach takes you from Tokyo to the Fuji 5th Station and on to Hakone, and the last leg runs by Shinkansen from Odawara. The train ride itself is short. What sets the tours apart is where the guided day stops, how the seats on the train work and what is waiting for you in Hakone.

What the train saves, and what it does not

The Shinkansen covers only Odawara to Tokyo, a ride of about half an hour. Only Kodama and some Hikari trains stop there, and the faster Nozomi passes through. Everything before that is coach time: the drive out of Tokyo in the morning, the climb to the 5th Station and the transfer to Hakone. One traveller on the H.I.S. tour describes a coach ride of about two hours to the 5th Station at the start of the day, and morning traffic still decides how much time is left for Hakone. What the train removes is the evening motorway into Tokyo, the part of a Fuji day that runs late most often.

Where the guided part ends

Japan Panoramic Tours includes the Shinkansen ticket from Odawara to Tokyo as part of the tour and names Tokyo Station, at around 18:00, as the end of the day; its product page does not say whether seats are reserved. With H.I.S. the ticket is also included, but the product page states that the guided part of the day ends in Odawara. From there you find the platform and board on your own, and the seats are unreserved. On a busy evening that can mean standing for part of the ride, or a family sitting in different rows. If you travel with children or with someone who needs a seat, that difference matters more than anything in the itinerary.

Luggage on the Shinkansen

These are day trips, so leave suitcases at the hotel. Large cases are not allowed on the tour coaches, and on the Shinkansen bags over 160 cm in total dimensions are restricted. A small day bag is what fits both the coach and the train.

Plan the last stretch to your hotel

From Odawara the Shinkansen stops at Shinagawa and ends at Tokyo Station, not at the coach stops in Shinjuku or Ginza. Check the connection to your hotel before the day, so you are not working it out on a crowded platform after ten hours on the road.

The 5th Station and Hakone on the same day

Both tours list the 5th Station on the Yamanashi side, which depends on the road being open. From about December to early April the Fuji Subaru Line is often closed by snow or ice, and Japan Panoramic Tours then swaps in other stops or a gift rather than a refund. The guide to the 5th Station explains the season and the altitude. In Hakone, Japan Panoramic Tours includes the ropeway and the cruise on Lake Ashi, and H.I.S. lists Owakudani, the ropeway and a boat on the lake. The Fuji and Hakone page compares these with the coach-only option that returns by road.

When the train is the better way home

The Shinkansen return is worth paying for on weekends, during Golden Week from 29 April to 5 May 2027 and around Obon in mid-August, when the drive back into Tokyo is at its slowest. It also suits anyone with plans that evening near Tokyo Station. On a quiet weekday in winter the coach-only tours lose less time on the motorway, and a Kawaguchiko tour gives you more hours facing the mountain.

Travellers on the Shinkansen tours

The critical voices describe a long day on the coach before the train, and a rainy day that ran as planned. The Shinkansen shortens the way home but not the morning drive or the time between stops.

“I would recommend this day out for anyone who would like to visit Mt Fuji without having to do much walking. … You start with a coach ride of about 2 hours to Mt Fuji 5th station …”

“It was perfectly paced giving us enough at all the spots. Although we could not see Mt Fuji due to clouds, Ms. Joy was looking out of the window throughout the tour so she can show us a glimpse whenever weather clears.”
Tapish · India · October 2026 Fuji and Hakone, Shinkansen from Odawara · H.I.S.
“Long!!!! Weather was poor, rainy. Bus was comfortable. Guide was fair, good. Bullet train was sleek.”

“Too much time spent on the coach travelling from place to place. All the stops seemed to be rushed”
