Mt Fuji day trip by train or bus

Getting to Lake Kawaguchi on your own is easy. Seeing the scattered viewpoints in one day without a vehicle is the hard part.

Kawaguchiko station is just under two hours from Shinjuku by highway bus, and there are trains as well. What a guided tour adds is the vehicle once you are there: the Chureito Pagoda, Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai lie in different directions from the station. If you would rather not link them up yourself, a Kawaguchiko tour covers the same ground in one day.

Where going alone is harder than it looks

The classic Fuji views are spread around the north side of the mountain. The Chureito Pagoda is about a 20-minute walk from Shimoyoshida station plus 398 steps, Oishi Park is on the far shore of Lake Kawaguchi, and Oshino Hakkai lies between the lakes. Linking them on your own means local buses, taxis or a lot of walking, and a day trip from Tokyo leaves little slack. A coach or minivan tour drives from one to the next and back to Tokyo. Fuji and Hakone on the same day, or the 5th Station, are harder still without a vehicle.

Where going alone is the better choice

If you want time at one place rather than a quick look at many, travel on your own and skip the tour timetable. The same goes for anyone who can stay a night at Lake Kawaguchi: the mountain is visible more often in the morning than in the afternoon, and from a lakeside hotel you are there at first light, long before the day trips arrive. And if you already hold a Japan Rail Pass and want Hakone, the Shinkansen to Odawara is covered.

The same weather rule applies

Going on your own does not change the odds of seeing Fuji. The advantage is that you can decide on the morning itself and stay at home if the summit is hidden. With a tour, make that decision before the free-cancellation deadline, as explained on the weather and cancellation page.

Hotel pickup as the middle way

Zebra Travel collects you from your hotel between 07:00 and 08:30 in a minivan for nine guests at most, which removes both the bus terminal and the transfers at the lake. The small-group page explains how its group size compares, and the private tours go one step further with a car for your party only.

Travellers on the hotel-pickup minivan

Hotel pickup takes the bus terminal out of the day, but it also means you depend on one driver arriving. One traveller below waited in vain and could not reach the operator. Note the contact details from the booking confirmation before the day, and wait in the hotel lobby where the staff can help you call if the car is late.

FAQ

Can I visit Mt Fuji from Tokyo without a tour?

Yes. Highway buses from Shinjuku reach Kawaguchiko station in just under two hours, and there are trains via Otsuki or a few direct limited express trains a day. Getting between the viewpoints around the lakes is the harder part without a vehicle.

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the trip to Kawaguchiko?

Only partly. It covers the train to Otsuki, but not the private railway from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko and not the highway buses. For Hakone, the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Odawara is covered.

Is the bus or the train faster to Kawaguchiko?

They are close. The highway bus from Shinjuku takes just under two hours, the direct limited express about two hours, and the route via Otsuki a little longer with the change.

Is a tour or the train better for the Chureito Pagoda?

On your own, the pagoda is about a 20-minute walk from Shimoyoshida station plus 398 steps, which suits a day with only a few stops. A tour combines it with Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai in one day.
