"Small group" is not a protected term on a booking page. Among the Fuji tours on this site, Zebra Travel is the one whose product page names a hard limit below ten: a minivan for nine guests at most. Another tour has "boutique small group" in its web address and allows up to 45 people. The sections on this page set out what each product page says about the group, and what that changes about the day.

Highlights

  • Many short stops on the Kawaguchiko side
  • Oshino Hakkai and Oishi Park

About this tour

The entry-level option with many short stops around Lake Kawaguchi, among them Oshino Hakkai and Oishi Park. The web address of the listing still calls it a boutique small-group tour, but the product page explains the real setup: up to 22 guests count as a small group, 23 to 45 as a large group, and the vehicle depends on how many people book.

Entrance fees are extra. If traffic eats into the day, the programme is shortened, because the vehicle may only run a fixed number of hours.

Where it starts

Tokyo Station, Marunouchi North side.

Know before you go

  • Group size 1 to 45; above 22 the operator speaks of a large group.
  • The programme is cut short in heavy traffic.

Facts taken from the operator's product page on the booking platform, checked in October 2026.

Nine seats in a minivan

Zebra Travel runs its Lake Kawaguchi tour in a minivan with a maximum of nine guests. You can join at Tokyo Station at 07:30, in Shinjuku at 08:00, or be collected from your hotel between 07:00 and 08:30. The driver is also the guide, and the product page itself warns of limited commentary and none while driving. A small vehicle gets everyone back on board quickly, without waiting for forty people at each stop. Route changes caused by weather or traffic are not refunded.

A web address that still says small group

The Joy OZ Tours listing was set up as a boutique small-group tour, and the web address still says so. The product page itself now explains the setup: 1 to 22 guests count as a small group, 23 to 45 as a large group, and the vehicle depends on how many people book. On a busy day you are on a full coach. It is still the entry-level option among the Fuji tours here, with many short stops around Lake Kawaguchi, but book it for the price and the stops, not for the group size. Entrance fees are extra, and the programme is cut short when traffic eats into the day. Several reviewers describe a driver with limited English and no separate guide on board.

Small group possible, maximum not stated

JRT Group writes that a small group is possible on its Kawaguchiko tour without naming a number. Treat that as a coach tour. The same goes for TAIHOU, GORYO and Japan Visionary Tour, which do not state a group size at all, and for the coaches of Japan Panoramic Tours and H.I.S., where one reviewer counted 42 passengers.

What group size changes on a Fuji day

  • Time at each stop. With a full coach, getting everyone off and back on takes a share of every stop, and one late group holds up the rest.
  • The Chureito Pagoda climb. Around 400 steps lead up to the viewpoint at Arakurayama, and a large group spreads out on the stairs.
  • Pickup. The minivan and the private cars can collect you at your hotel; coach tours start at fixed meeting points such as the LOVE sculpture in Shinjuku, where several tours gather at once.
  • Questions. In a group of nine you can ask the driver to stop for a photo. On a coach the timetable decides.
Smaller still

If group size is the main point, a private car takes only your party: up to five people with Mount Fuji Discoveries, up to three with Wonder land. The price is per car, so it only pays off when you fill the seats. The private tour comparison sets both side by side.

Travellers on the minivan and on the Joy OZ tour

On both tours the driver runs the day, and that is where most criticism starts: little commentary, limited English, no separate guide. The Joy OZ reviewer from Turkey also counts five stops out of the nine in the title, which matches the rule that the programme is cut short when traffic eats into the day.

“Great trip ,6 different vantage points ,it is weather dependent if you see mt fuji ,lots of toilet at stops ,lots of shops ,street food cafes along the way.Good small group of 9.”
Sandra · Australia · October 2026 Small-group Kawaguchiko tour · Zebra Travel
“The itinerary was great, we got to see a lot of places and had free time to walk around. The were no crowds today, likely due to the low clouds which hid Mt. Fuji all day. Out driver was very nice, but there was a bit of language issue which caused confusion regarding how much time we had at each location and when to be back.”

“7:30 am , a 2.5 hours drive to our first stop. Driver was pretty much mute with no narration. Drops us off at the lake for 40 minutes with no explanation and takes off for a while. No explanation of where we could find a restroom or coffee.”

“Supposed to be an English tour but Driver’s English was very poor and no guide on board.”

“most of what was promised wasn't delivered. We were supposed to visit 9 places, but only 5 were visited. There was never a tour guide. We travelled with a driver who didn't speak English, and we had to explore on our own at the places we were dropped off.”
