Weather, traffic and refunds on Mt Fuji tours
Fuji tours run in cloud and rain. Here is what each operator promises when the day does not go to plan, and how to protect yourself before it starts.
A Fuji day trip is sold as a day out, not as a view. Tours leave in cloud and in rain, and a hidden mountain is the most common complaint after the day. Three things go wrong most often: cloud, a changed or closed stop, and traffic.
The rules of each tour
What each product page says about cloud, changed stops and traffic. "Not stated" means the page is silent, which in practice rarely means a refund. Sorted by number of reviews.

Cloud is not a reason to cancel the tour
No product page on this site offers to call off the tour because the summit is hidden. GORYO says outright that there is no refund if Fuji is not visible, Zebra Travel does not refund changes caused by weather, and Wonder land runs in any weather. Japan Panoramic Tours replaces stops lost to weather or closed roads with other stops or a gift. The remaining product pages say nothing on the subject, and silence on a booking page is not a refund promise. One traveller below writes that the tour continued despite the poor conditions and nothing promised was seen. That is how these days work, and it is why the decision has to be yours, and made earlier.
How to use free cancellation as weather insurance
- Book with free cancellation, which every tour on this site offers, early in your stay rather than for your last day.
- Note the cancellation deadline. On every tour here it is 24 hours before the start, and the booking page shows the exact cutoff for your date and option.
- Before the deadline, look at the forecast for the Kawaguchiko area and at the live cameras around the mountain.
- If the outlook is grey, cancel and rebook a later day. If you have only one possible day, choose a tour that still works without the view, such as a Fuji and Hakone combination.
The visibility page links to the live cameras and shows how much the chances change through the year.
Closed roads and changed stops
The usual closure is the Fuji Subaru Line to the 5th Station, which shuts when snow or ice is on it, often from about December to early April. GORYO plans for that with a Mt Fuji museum outside the season. Mount Fuji Discoveries is the one tour here that offers a full refund, as an alternative to other stops, when the 5th Station is closed. In Hakone, TAIHOU refunds the ropeway part by e-mail when the Hakone Ropeway does not run. JRT Group lists marathon dates on which its route changes: 12 and 13 December 2026, 2, 3 and 10 January, 7 March and 19 April 2027.
Traffic, and the dates to avoid in 2027
| When | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Weekends all year | Heavier traffic out of and back into Tokyo than on weekdays |
| 29 April to 5 May 2027 | Golden Week, the busiest holiday week of the spring |
| Mid-August 2027 | Obon holidays, with heavy traffic on the motorways |
| JRT Group marathon dates | The route of that tour changes |
Traffic is never refunded. TAIHOU warns of a return after 20:00, GORYO of two to three hours of delay, and Joy OZ cuts the programme when the day runs long. Book nothing with a fixed start time on the evening of a Fuji tour. The Shinkansen tours skip the evening motorway into Tokyo, and the private cars can at least change the order of the day.
Travellers on cloudy and rainy days
Most critical reviews of Fuji tours come down to weather and traffic. Two of these travellers did not see the mountain, one regrets that the tour ran at all in poor conditions, and one gave full marks despite constant rain. The last one had to cancel a later booking because traffic made the tour hours longer. Clear days happen too, but they are not something a tour can sell, and a delay is not refunded.
“We did everything planned however with continuous rain it didn't make the trip as memorable as it could have been in better weather”
“we were extremely lucky to see it clearly in the morning, apparently for the first time in weeks. However … We only had 30 minutes at Oishi Park and around 1 hour at Arakurayama.”
“No Fuji, and I found the rest rather uninteresting. …”
“We were really disappointed in that you continued with the trip despite the poor weather conditions. We didn't get to see anything that was promised on the trip.”
“we had to cancel an event that was happening 2.5 hours after this event since we stuck in traffic, it took 4.5 hours longer than normal.”

FAQ
Is a Mt Fuji tour cancelled if the weather is bad?
Usually not. Tours run in cloud and rain, and stops that cannot be visited are replaced or dropped. Wonder land states that it runs in any weather.
Do I get a refund if I cannot see Mt Fuji?
No tour on this site promises one. GORYO rules it out, Zebra Travel does not refund weather changes, and Japan Panoramic Tours offers other stops or a gift. Use the free cancellation before the deadline instead.
How late can I cancel a Mt Fuji tour for free?
On every tour here up to 24 hours before the start, with a full refund. The booking page shows the exact cutoff for your date and option; check it when you book.
What happens if the 5th Station road is closed?
It depends on the tour. GORYO goes to a Mt Fuji museum, Japan Panoramic Tours offers other stops or a gift, and Mount Fuji Discoveries lets you choose between a full refund and other stops.
What if traffic makes the tour late?
Delays are not refunded. TAIHOU warns of returns after 20:00, GORYO of two to three hours of delay, and Joy OZ shortens the programme. Keep the evening free.
