How often you see Fuji, month by month
The share of days on which the mountain was visible from Fuji City, averaged over about 30 years. The second column shows whether tours can drive up to the 5th Station on the Fuji Subaru Line.
| Month | Fuji seen from Fuji City | 5th Station by road | Also in this month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 45–53 % of days | Often closed or skipped (snow and ice) | Cold, clear mornings. The rest house at the 5th Station is closed January to March. |
| Feb | 41–44 % of days | Often closed or skipped (snow and ice) | Still one of the better months for a view. |
| Mar | 28–31 % of days | Often closed or skipped (snow and ice) | The chance of a view falls month by month from here until July. |
| Apr | 25–31 % of days | Usually reopens to tours in late April | Cherry blossom at the Chureito Pagoda, roughly 10 to 14 days after Tokyo. Golden Week traffic from 29 April 2027. |
| May | 18–25 % of days | Usually visited, weather permitting | Golden Week traffic until 5 May 2027. The Fuji Shibazakura moss phlox season usually runs from mid-April to late May; 2027 dates are not yet published. |
| Jun | 6–10 % of days | Usually visited, weather permitting | Among the lowest chances of the year. |
| Jul | 4–6 % of days | Private cars barred from about 10 July (climbing season) | The lowest chance of the year. |
| Aug | 6–8 % of days | Private cars barred until about 10 September | Heavy holiday traffic around Obon in mid-August. |
| Sep | 11–17 % of days | Private-car ban ends around 10 September | Views slowly return towards the end of the month. |
| Oct | 21–28 % of days | Usually visited, weather permitting | The chance of a view is several times higher than in summer. |
| Nov | 39–44 % of days | Usually visited, weather permitting | Autumn colours around Lake Kawaguchi during November. |
| Dec | 44–56 % of days | Often closed or skipped from about December | The best chance of the year falls in late December and early January. |
Morning views are more likely than afternoon ones. Trackers that check the north side from Lake Kawaguchi each morning report higher shares than the Fuji City figures, because they measure at a different place and time of day. The 5th Station road can also close at short notice outside winter when snow or ice is on the road.
- Cloud is the biggest risk, and it is almost never refunded. GORYO states it outright, and Japan Panoramic Tours offers other stops or a gift instead of money. Keep an eye on the forecast and use the free cancellation before its deadline.
- Coaches get stuck in traffic on the way back. One operator names a return around 18:10 and warns of after 20:00; another mentions two to three hours of delay. Weekends, Golden Week and mid-August are the worst.
- The 5th Station is a summer-half stop. From about December to early April the road is often closed, and tours swap in a museum or other stops.
- A small-group label does not guarantee a small group. One tour with "small group" in its web address takes up to 45 guests; the minivan tour of Zebra Travel takes nine.
- Several things are paid on the day: entrance fees on some tours, the pirate ship on Lake Ashi on the TAIHOU tour, and lunch on almost all of them.
- Meeting points are crowded. At the LOVE sculpture in Shinjuku several tours gather at the same time, and a coach does not wait for late guests.
Choosing the kind of day
Same mountain, different days. Each type trades time near Fuji against comfort, flexibility or a quicker way home.
Kawaguchiko classic
The north side of the mountain: Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida, Oishi Park on Lake Kawaguchi, the spring ponds of Oshino Hakkai. Many stops, the most time facing Fuji, and the lowest prices.
Fuji and Hakone
Fewer Fuji stops in exchange for the Hakone Ropeway over the volcanic valley of Owakudani and a boat on Lake Ashi. A better bet on a cloudy day, since Hakone still has something to show.
Shinkansen return
You leave the coach in Odawara and ride the bullet train back, skipping the worst of the motorway traffic into Tokyo. The ticket is included on these tours, so they cost more than a coach-only day.
Small group or private
A minivan with nine seats at most, or a private car with a driver who picks you up at the hotel. With a private car you can change the plan when the clouds move; the price is per vehicle.
Keep the evening free
A Fuji day ends whenever the motorway lets it, so book anything with a fixed start time for another day of your stay. A sumo show in Tokyo works well on a different evening, and our sister site compares the sumo shows, tournaments and morning practice visits in Tokyo. For dinner with a guide on a free night, the Tokyo food tour comparison covers evening walks and cooking classes.
Built around the questions people ask after the trip
Most complaints after a Fuji day trip are about the same few things: a mountain hidden in cloud, a late coach home, a skipped 5th Station, a "small group" of forty. We put the bookable tours side by side with exactly those details, taken from each operator's product page, and say where a page leaves something open. If you book through a link here, the booking platform pays us a commission out of its margin; your price is the same.
FAQ about Mt Fuji day trips
Which Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo should I book?
Decide on the route first. Kawaguchiko tours stay on the north side of the mountain with the Chureito Pagoda, Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai. Fuji and Hakone tours add the Hakone Ropeway and Lake Ashi, and some of them bring you back by Shinkansen. Then decide on the group: coach, a minivan with nine seats at most, or a private car with a driver. The decision list on our tour comparison page goes through these choices one by one.
When is Mt Fuji most likely to be visible?
In winter and in the morning. Long-term data from Fuji City shows the mountain on roughly 40 to 55 percent of days from December to February, but only on about one day in twenty in July. Late December and early January are the best weeks. Spring and autumn sit in between, and November is clearly better than October.
Do I get my money back if Mt Fuji is hidden by cloud?
Usually not. GORYO states that there is no refund if the mountain is not visible. Japan Panoramic Tours replaces cancelled stops with other stops or a gift rather than a refund, and Zebra Travel does not refund changes caused by weather or traffic. Your protection is the free cancellation that all tours on this site offer: watch the forecast and cancel before the deadline shown on the booking page.
Can tours go to the Fuji 5th Station in winter?
Often not. From about December to early April the Fuji Subaru Line is frequently closed by snow or ice, and many tours do not plan the 5th Station then. GORYO stops at a Mt Fuji museum outside the season. Mount Fuji Discoveries offers a full refund or other stops if the 5th Station is closed. Since 10 September 2026 the Fujinomiya 5th Station on the Shizuoka side has also been in its winter closure.
Should I choose Kawaguchiko or a Fuji and Hakone tour?
Kawaguchiko is about views of the mountain across the lakes and from the pagoda, with more stops near Fuji. Hakone adds a volcanic valley, a ropeway and a boat on Lake Ashi, so there is less time close to the mountain itself. On a cloudy day Hakone still gives you something to see; on a clear winter day Kawaguchiko gives you more of Fuji.
Are small-group Fuji tours really small?
Not always. The Joy OZ tour has "boutique small group" in its web address, yet the product page allows up to 45 guests and only calls groups of up to 22 small. Zebra Travel uses a minivan with a maximum of nine guests. If group size matters to you, look at the group column in our table rather than the tour title.
When will I be back in Tokyo?
Plan for the evening, and later on weekends and holidays. TAIHOU names a return around 18:10 but warns that it can be after 20:00, and GORYO mentions delays of two to three hours in traffic. Tours with a Shinkansen return avoid the motorway back into Tokyo, but the H.I.S. tour ends in Odawara and you board the train on your own.
Is lunch included on a Mt Fuji tour?
On the tours here it is either optional or not included. Japan Panoramic Tours offers a buffet lunch at extra cost, Japan Visionary Tour offers bento options, and the private drivers do not include meals. Entrance fees are extra on several tours, and the pirate ship on Lake Ashi is paid on the day on the TAIHOU tour.
Is a private Fuji tour worth it?
For three to five people it can be. You set the route, change plans when the clouds move and get picked up at your hotel. The price is per vehicle, so it divides by the number of people in your group. In practice the driver is also the guide, so do not expect the commentary of a dedicated tour guide.
How much does a Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo cost?
The current prices are in the comparison table on this page. Kawaguchiko coach tours are the cheapest way to go, tours with the Hakone Ropeway, a cruise and a Shinkansen return cost noticeably more, and private cars are priced per vehicle rather than per person.
